1.THE FLOODS IN ASSAM
A FEW ENGLISH ESSAYS FOR CLASS SECONDARY LEVEL STUDENTS
INTRODUCTION: Assam is a land of rivers and tributaries. These streams of water become full in summer because of heavy rainfall. As a result of it, flood occurs in Assam every year in summer. The people of Assam is well acquainted with floods though it is an unwanted guest. It is a chronic ptoblem of Assam. It has broken the backbone of the economy of the state.
CAUSES OF FLOODS :- It rains heavily in summer in Assam. The great earthquake had raised the river beds of the mighty Brahmaputra . Continuous erosion also decreases the depth of the Brahmaputra, the Borak and their tributaries. So the capacity of holding water of these rivers has been decreasing. When there is a heavy downpour, these rivers and tributaries cause flood submerging their neighbouring areas. Moreover, old and weak embankments break at several places as they can't resist the pressure of the overflowing water. Floods occur several times in a year in Assam during the rainy season.
DAMAGE CAUSED BY FLOODS :- Flood is the worst enemy of Assam. Every year it damages crops of several thousands of hectares of land and valuable properties of people. A lot of fertile land becomes uncultivable after flood due to sand deposited on it. Thousands of people become homeless. Many villages have lost existence during the severe erosion occurs at the time of flood and after the flood. Many people die in flood every year. Cows, goats, buffaloes, ducks, hens and other domestic animals and birds are washed away. Epidemic diseases rapidly spread after the flood as water gets contaminated. Diseases like cholera, jaundice, malaria break out after the flood and kill a number of people. After all, the condition of flood affected people is beyond description.
RELIEF AND OTHER HELPS :- The Government, Non Government Organisations(NGO) different Social Organisations, some International Organisations, come forward to help the flood victims. They provide food materials, medicines, pure drinking water, clothes to the flood affected people. But these are not adequate to meet the demands of the huge number of the flood affected people. Many people have to remain hungry and thirsty during the flood.
CONCLUSION :-The flood is a harmful natural calamity. The people of Assam have to suffer continuously for it every year. Mere sending of relief is not a solution of flood problem. Government should take some concrete steps to control flood. The river beds should be dug to increase the depth of the rivers. Sufficient plantations should be made to control the erosion. Embankments should be repaired long before the coming of monsoon. Interlinking of the rivers of India may reduce the danger of the flood problem. If these steps were taken, Assam may be free from the ravage of flood

3.A VISIT TO PLACE OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE
Travelling is a part of education. When we visit a place, we can know a lot of things about it. If the place has some historical importance, the result of the visit acquires a new depth. It will give us a good knowledge of history, geography, literature and culture. Many scholars, historians and curious people visit such a place everyday.
I also like travelling. I like visiting new places, especially those places which have historical importance. Last year, during the summer vacation, I visited Delhi. It is the capital city of India. I was accompanied by my parents. One of my uncles lived there. I visited a few places of Delhi with my cousin who is also the same age with me.
We reached Delhi on12 th July by the Rajdhani Express. We took rest for the day at my uncle's house. Next morning I ,with my parents and cousin, visited the Rajghat, the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.Thereafter, we visited the Shanti Ghat, the Samadhi of Lal Bahadur Shastry, the second Prime Minister of India. Then we went to the India Gate. In the afternoon we visited the Parliament Building, the symbol of pride for the largest democracy of the world. On the third day we visited the Red Fort . When I stood before the red coloured building, the picture of the Prime Minister addressing the nation on the Republic Day came to my mind. We also visited the Jama Masjid, the Qutub Minar on the same day. When we reached the Firoj Shah Kotla Ground, my joy knew no bound as I often see this stadium on television screen. I bowed down my head when our car passed by the Supreme Court of India Buidings. However, I could not fulfil my desire to see how the court functions as it was a holiday. On the fifth day I visited Agra with my cousin. My parents were not with me as they were feeling unwell due to extreme hot weather of Delhi. We two visited the Taj Mahal, the beautiful monument built by Shahjahan, to immortalise his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. On the sixyh day I also visited a few places outside the city area with my cousin. He was well acquainted with all places of the union territory. I thanked him for helping me to see all those places. On the seventh day we boarded the Rajdhani Express to make the return journey. The whole family of my uncles came to the railway station to see off us.
Our visit to Delhi was quite useful to us. It helped me to see and know the capital territory of our country. It also enriched my knowledge of history.Though I was sad to leave my cousin ,the experience of the visit and the pleasure I derived made me forget everything.
4.MY LAST DAY AT SCHOOL
It is the tradition of every institution to welcome the new students on the Freshers' Day and give farewell to the Class X or Class XII students who are parting from the school. Although the word 'parting' is always sad, but our parting from school is not so sad. We are going to begin a new chapter of our academic life after the Board/Council Examination. Perhaps this day is the memorable day in life of every student.
I have a mix feeling on that day. The students of class IX /XI came previousday to give us a formal invitation to the meeting. My mixed feeling is created because it became unbearable for me to leave the school where I have studied for almost five years. I shall no more see my favourite teachers and other employees of the school , as I am doing now. I shall on more see the junior students regularly. An inseparable bond has been created between them and us. On the other hand I am excited because I am going to a bigger institution a few months later. It will be quite interesting for me. With this feeling I entered the school compound at 10-00 am.
The meeting started just after my arrival. Both the junior students and teachers delivered emotional speeches to give us farewell. Their voices were very touching and appealing. We begged forgiveness from our teachers and students if we had shown them any impoliteness or rude behaviour. The junior students also did the same. Our teachers offered their heartful blessings to us. They also expressed their hope that all of us will pass the examintion in flying colors. We promised to do our best to brighten the name of our school.
After the meeting we had a tea party. It was a good party . All the students took tea and delicious cakes. It was really a good experience to have as five hundred students and teachers took tea in a hall. There after we took part in a cultural programme. All the students of our class did something in the cultural field. Some one sang, some danced, some made recitation, some performed mono-acting etc. At about 3-00 pm the function ended. Thereafter, we had a good feast with our teachers. We returned home at about 4-30pm.The teacher offered their heartful blessing to us again.
My last at school was a remarkable day in my life. It will remain so for the whole period of my life. It was an encouraging event for my life. Though there was a light feeling of sadness in my mind I like to remember this eventful day for my life.
