1. MY DAILY LIFE

Everyman passes his days doing some regular works. This is his daily life. I also pass  every day doing some regular works. It is my daily life.

It is very simple. It mainly centres round my studies as I am a student I get up very early in the morning and I go for a walk for half an hour. Then I return home and take a glass of milk. Thereafter, I sit at my reading table. I read till 8 O' clock. Then I take bath.  I have my morning meal at 8:30 am. At 8:45 am  I start for school on bicycle. My school is only one km away from our home. I reach school at 8-55 a.m., five minutes before prayer. Our classes begin at 9-15 am. I listen attentively to what my teachers say in the class. I note down the important points on my notebook. At leisure I take tiffin with friends. Our school ends at 3-30pm. I come home direct as soon as the final bell rings.

I wash my hands  and feet and take my dinner. Thereafter, I take  rest for an hour. At this time I also read the day's newspaper. Then I go out to play some outdoor games with my friends. It helps me to keep my body physically fit.

At 6-00 pm I sit at my reading table. At first I do my homework. Then I study my text books. I have made  a routine giving equal time to each subject. I read up to 10 pm. Then I take supper at 10-30 . I enjoy some favourite TV programmes with my parents. I go to to bed at 11-00pm. In this way my simple daily life comes to an end.

I follow a slightly different routine on Sundays and other holidays. I help my parents in doing  their simple domestic works on holidays. We have a garden of fruits and vegetable. I work in the garden at least for two hours on holidays. Sometimes I visit the District Library to borrow books. I read them on holidays and in leisure time.

 2. MY HOBBY

Everyman passes his leisure time doing some thing that he likes most. That is his hobby. It helps a man  to get  relaxation from his daily monotonous works. I have also a hobby. I like to pass my leisure time by reading different types of books. In other words reading is my hobby.

Every month my father buys a good number of books  since he knows what my hobby is. Every year we visit Guwahati Book Fair and North- East Book Fair. We buy some valuable books in these two book fairs. My father gives me Rs20 every day to have something at leisure time. I save Rs 10 of this money. I buy books with this money . When I can save sufficient money to buy one or two good books, I visit the local bookstall and buy books that  I like. Even my friends and relatives give me books as presents on my birthday knowing about my hobby. In this way I have made a good personal library at home. There are about one thousand books in my personal library. I read all these books at my leisure time and holidays.

My hobby is , no doubt, a noble one. The first duty of a student is to acquire knowledge. So my hobby helps me to fulfil this aim. Secondly a good  book is a true friend. It never betrays us. It also give me immense pleasure. By this hobby I have managed to search out one of my good friends. I hope this hobby will help me to lead my life in a right direction.

3. A LOCAL FESTIVAL : THE BIHU

Assam is a land of festivals. A number of festivals are celebrated here every year. Among them I like most the Bihu which is  the life line of the Assamese people.

The people of Assam celebrate three Bihus in a year. These are The Bohag Bihu or the Rangali Bihu, the Kaati Bihu or  the Kangali Bihu and the Magh Bihu or the Bhogali Bihu. People celebrate these three Bihus with  great enthusiasm.

The Bohag Bihu commences from the last day of the last month(Chot) of the Assamese year. It continues for a week i.e. till the sixth day of the new year. The first day is called 'Garu Bihu' which means Bihu for cows. On this day cows are bathed in rivers or ponds. They are  given new ropes for tithering. The second day is Bihu for man, called 'Manuh Bihu'. This day parents give new dresses to their children. The young show respect to elders. The women and girls weave a kind if towel in their handlooms known as' Bihuwan'. They present it to their relatives, dearest and nearest ones. The young men and women sing Bihu songs dancing in the field. Some groups also visit houses of people singing 'Bihu Huchari' and offer blessing to families. Now-a-days various cultural funcions are held on stages during this Bihu. Even Bihu songs and dances are performed on stages instead of fields. This Bihu is a festival of merry making. That is why this Bihu is called the Rangali Bihu ,the Bihu of joy.

The Kaati Bihu is celebrated on the transition day of two Assamese months 'Ahin' and 'Kaati'. It is called 'Kangali Bihu' or the Bihu for the poor. People are needy at this time of the year. So they have nothing to make feasting and merriment. They only light earthen lantern in the corn- fields, granary and  under tulsi plants, which is considered to be a sacred plant.

The third Bihu is the Magh Bihu or the Bhogali Bihu. It commences from the last day of the 9th Assamese month, 'Puh'. It is the Bihu of feasting as the people have sufficient amount of food grains after harvest. The young peple make 'mejis' in the fields. They set fire to these mejis and worship the god of fire. The day before the  Bihu is called Uruka. On this day all families, rich and poor, arrange a rich feast. Indeed, people arrange feast for the whole month of Magh. The relatives are invited and they are served with delicious foods. Every family makes some special type of cakes like 'til pitha', 'chunga pitha', 'narikal laddu' etc to serve the guests.

The three Bihus are the backbone of Assamese culture. It is celebrated by all the Assamese people without considering religions , castes and tribes. It enhances unity among people who live in Assam. Really the three  Bihus are the symbol of unity.

4. THE PRIZE DISTRIBUTION DAY OF MY SCHOOL
(A FUNCTION HELD IN YOUR INSTITUTION)
 :::::::::: :::::::: ::::::::: :::::::: ::::::::

The prize Distribution Day of  an institution is one of the remarkable days for the   students. The students of an institution anxiously keep waiting  for this day  for the whole  year. I am also not an exception to it. The parents of students also become enthusiastic about this function as they like to see their children's performance  among many students of the institution.

This year the prize distribution day of our school was held on 25th day of January. The competitions in the fields of arts and culture, games and sports were held in the previous week On this day those who has shown good performance in the academic fields, art and culture, games and sports were rewarded.
We made an elaborate plan to make this function a grand success. We invited the Inspector of Schools of our district to preside over the meeting. Mr A K Saikia, a renown poet, was invited as the distinguished speaker. Two retired teachers were also invited as guests of honour. We erected a beautiful stage in the middle of the school compound. Chairs were placed on the stage for the chairperson, the distinguished speaker, two guests and the Headmaster/Principal of our school. The prizes were displayed on a big table placed in one corner of the stage. The school gate was cleaned and well decorated. We stood in lines to greet the guests when they arrived. We also arranged lines of chairs for the guests and guardians  and benches for students in front of the stage .

The meeting started at 10-00am. It began with a coral song sung by the students of our school. Then the guests were led to the stage. They were presented with Assamese 'Japi' and ' Phulam  Gamocha' . The Headmaster read out the Annual Report which was adopted unanimously. The secretary of the Students' Union gave a brief report of annual activities. The distinguished speaker delivered  a long useful advice. The two guests of honour also gave us a lot of useful advices. One of them delivered a humourous speech. The president greeted those who were able to win prizes in different fields. He also encouraged those who were unable to win a prize to do better in future. After the distributions of prizes by the president, the students of our school staged a good cultural show of songs, dance, recitations and mono- acting. All enjoyed this programme. The president of the Students' Union offered vote of thanks to all. The meeting ended with the singing of the national anthem.

The Prize Distribution  Day is  an important day of all institutions. The pupils of the  institution  enjoy this day after a year of monotonous studies. This function inspires each  student to show their efficiency and talents in different fields. It also helps them to involve in some extra curricular activities. Good students get encouraged to do the best  in various fields of co-curricular activities.

5. THE NEWSPAPER

A newspaper is a history of everyday. We find the description of all the happenings in the world on the pages of newspaper. It can be called the mirror of the world. The main work of a news paper is to circulate news to in each corner of the world. A modern man can't think of a  life without a newspaper. Some people can pass the day without a meal, but can't without the newspaper. One can keep contact with the whole world reading the news paper sitting at his home.

The first newspaper was started in Venice in 1536.There was no newspaper in India before the British came .The 'India Gazet' was the first newspaper in India. It was started in 1744.'The Arunodoy' was the first Assamese news paper. It was published by the Christian missionary in 1846 from Sivasagar in Upper Assam.

The newspaper may be of different types. These are dailies, weeklies,, biweeklies, monthlies, fortnightlies etc. Generally newspapers appear in the morning. But there are a  few newspapers that get published and circulated in the evening. Some newspapers are written in English while some are in regional languages. In India a good number of news papers appear in different regional languages like Assamese, Bengali,Tamil etc.

A newspaper is very useful for all sections of people of the society. It is a sort of contemporary history. A student, a teacher, a businessman , a politician, a thinker all can get the news of their own interest in a newspaper. Students and teachers  are highly benifitted by the articles written by different scholars and thinkers in a news paper. Political leaders may learn a lot about politics reading the comments of political analysers in the newspaper. Government can make public know about their new plans and schemes with the help of a newspaper. Public can express their views regarding functioning of a government. Newspapers can form public opinion against the misrule or abuse of power by a government. A business house can advertise their products in newspapers. Buyers can select their suitable products reading the merits and demerits of them. There are also news of art and culture, new discoveries and inventions which can immensely help us.

A newspaper may sometime be proved harmful. It may be a curse instead of blessing to people. Some newspapers may circulate false news to create tension and defame a man they don't like. Many papers circulate exaggerated news which mislead public. Some newspapers may back a political party. They praise everything that their favourite party does ; but bitterly criticise even a good plan of other parties . Such newspapers  totally mislead some simple minded people.

A newspaoer is really a very useful thing for the modern world. It has a great role to play in a society. But it should be impartial in circulating news. A newspaper can easily spoil a good effort, defame a good man if it wants to do so. But it should not do that. It should work for common good.  Only then it may be called the fourth pillar of democracy.
